To ramp or to jack? That is the question. 200 1990

I was working under my 245 for the first time recently and I had purchased some ramps (Rino Ramps or something) thinking that they would be the more economical and convenient way to raise the car. When I shimmied under there I was surprised how little clearance was actually offered by those ramps. I was under the transmission, not the engine, so that had something to do with it, but in general would a floor jack and some jack stands be a better way to go? I've shied away from jackstands because, frankly, the "catch" or the "latch" has always appeared insubstantial and too small to provide truly secure support (it is a CAR over my head). What do you all recommend? Should I put my faith in the engineers and get some jack stands for better clearance? Are they safe or should I stick with the ramps?
