Proper way to change out A/C pump--help, please 200 1990

The A/C pump on my sister's 240 went belly up. The seal broke and black ink-like spots spattered all over the interior where the fan blades caught it coming off the belts and threw it all over the engine compartment. There is air in the fish eye bubble telling me that some/most/all of the freon has leaked out.

Should I take the car in to a garage and have whatever freon is left removed? And then drive home, remove the A/C pump, install a new one, drive back to the garage and have them charge the system? Or, would it be better to just give them a rebuilt A/C pump and have them drain, remove, install and recharge the system, bite the bullet and pay for it all? I'm handy with tools, but I don't want to disconnect that system without knowing there is no more freon to release into the atmosphere.

Additionally, can someone point me to where I can get a rebuilt one, or where not to. I was thinking of going to NAPA after Memorial Day and seeing if they had one. Volvo would be a bit expensive, I'm afraid, plus there's always the hassle of a core charge and returning the old one. Wrecking yards would be iffy, considering the cost of having the system charged, and then finding out it doesn't work.

Advice, please. Dick
