I posted earlier on this problem - need more help ! the car is a 96 960 with the auto-temp a/c system. compressor does not turn on most of the time. very occasionally, it will, and then the a/c works fine.

here's what I have done so far -
- local garage looked at the a/c for me, supplied power directly to the compressor, a/c then worked fine.

- I pulled the ECC module out and checked for cracks in the soldered joints - could not find any.

- the only error code from the ECC is 1-6-1, which indicates the solar sensor on the dash has a problem.

2 questions -

1. can a malfunctioning solar sensor cause the symptoms I'm seeing ?

2. the FAQ section on A/C problems mentions another circuit board associated with the A/C - called the solenoid control board (?). and says that it is located behind the dash in the passenger footwell. Where exactly is this, and how would I get access to it ?
