'75 164 Wheel Bearing - How tight? 140-160

New bearings & seals:

The Haynes manual says to torque to 50ft/lbs and then back off 1/3 turn. The instructions that came with the bearings say to tighten until the hub doesn't turn "freely", and then back off until it turns freely.

The problem is with both methods, the hub has some play (a very small amount of play) which is audible if I push the hub in and out. If I move the castle nut to the next notch, the play goes away, but the hub feels a little tight when I turn it.

Is it better to have no play and a somewhat tight hub, or a little play and a freely turning hub? This is the difference between one single castle nut notch!

Thanks much,

Adam
