low idle w/air cond. on 700 1991

'91 740, with the usual minor defects, has this nagging habit. Will not idle fast enough to keep from literally shaking while stopped. This happens while in drive with the a/c on. With a/c off it idles fine at about 700-800 rpm. Is there a seperate circuit or device that kicks the idle up when a/c is on or what should I check? Sorry for the newbie question but I'm new to Volvos and don't have a service guide. My next stop will be the library hoping they have one.
