Auto tranny starting to go. Suggestions?

Especially when cold in AM, in Drive it stays in first gear. After a few minutes babying it, I can manually shift to 2nd. A few minutes more it will go through the gears in Drive. Fluid fairly fresh, full, and looks good.
Should I wait for it to fail or take it to a trans shop? Am I looking at big $$?

1992 240 auto, 150,000 miles.
