Wheel Guiding Pins 200 1990

Well a while ago I was interested in picking up some alloy Corona wheels to replace my stock steel with plastic rims. Being short on cash, I went the way of the salvage yard and managed to score some pretty solid alloys with the caps to match. They had been sitting in my garage waiting to be restored with paint and new tires when I realized something as I was fixing a flat. I saw that there was a guiding pin on the wheel mount that slid into the stock tires. I guess these pins were standard on the later model volvos, evidenced by newer coronas having the hole for this pin as seen in the archives. My question is, would it effect the stability of the wheel or mount if I were to file off this guide pin or would it be better to have a machinist simply drill a hole in the rim itself. I dont think it would matter too much but figured it didn't hurt to ask.
