busted strut tower on 240

Hi,
I`m in need of some advice fairly quckly. My daughter just called to say that her 240 had broke down & she had it towed to an indie shop. The service guy said it was a busted strut tower(she`d thought it was a whl bearing)& that new ones would be $1500. installed. However, he had a used set for 175 each plus installation. Is she about to get "ripped off"?- this particular shop does not have a very good reputation & like most students, she does not have loads of $!!
