78 242 - alternator not charging - or limited output....... STUMPED 200 1978

So - the battery on the ole 78 242 keeps going dead.
Things are OK if we charge it every night.

The alternator light is not comingon - although it is lit when the key is first turned on before starting.....

I had an auto elctrical shop service the alternator about 5 months ago - then whenit started acting up - I swapped out alternators.

The replacement alternator is also not charging.

Brushes are good.

what could be wrong that would not trigger the "idiot" light...

Yet not provide enough charge to maintain the battery.
