The middle part of father's day was not a good time for this grandfather! After breakfast and a chat with one of my sons I proceeded to the garage to install the new recirculation bellows. I had previously shortened the attachment posts as much as I dared and had pre-cut the threads by running the nuts on and off a few times.
About 15 minutes into the process I broke one of the attachment posts clean off at the surface of the housing. So, on the hopes that the remaining post would be sufficient, I proceeded to attach the actuating rod to the door and attempted to put the nut on the remaining post. The key word is "attempted". I hadn't left enough of the post on to create a lead-in and I couldn't get the dam nut started.
So I jammed an old sponge behind the bellows to kind of keep it in place and put the ducts back on, buttoned the rest of the car back together. The system sort of works but the door doesn't fully block incoming air in recirculate mode.
I have another bellows on order, along with extra nuts and clips that attach the actuator rod to the door. Next time the plan is to cut more of the housing away so I can slide the post that normally breaks in without trying to create space enough to have it drop into the hole. (Effectively create a slot to the hole.)
BTW, I also got sick, nausea and a splitting head ach, for a few hours in the middle of the ordeal, as a result of inhaling vinyl plastic fumes because the drop light heated the protective floor mat! Not enough to physically alter the carpet side in any way, just enough to cause the back side to out-gas. I recovered enough, (watching the disaster F! at Indy), to enjoy a nice supper with my other son and my two grandsons.
