1982 240 - Noisy Fuel Pump 200 1982

I've had this noisy fuel pump for a while now.
There was a posting blaming the pressure regulator
for clogging the return line and causing the noise.

A Volvo mechanic believes that the noise indicates
that the pump is on its last leg.

IS THIS NORMAL MODE FOR THE FUEL PUMP?
What is the experience with longevity of noisy pumps.
Is there anything I can do to prolong its life...
I would rather not replace it if possible.
