Alternator connections 200 1982

Howdy.

On the B+ terminal are 2 wires, the main one going to the starter, and another smaller wire going to a small box on the back of the alternator. They are screwed into the same bolt but with a nut between them. Is it necessary that these 2 wires be separtated by the nut? Should they also be insulated from the body of the alternator by another nut or washer?
