Voltmeter, why only turbo? 700 1990

Why were voltmeters only installed factory on turbo models? When it comes to my car, I'm a bit of a control freak and I like to know what it is doing at all times (hence the manual transmission love). Is it possible to put a voltmeter on a non-turbo? There's a spot for it in the cluster, just no gauge. If it can be done, how much work would it be and how much would it be to get one? Would it be worth it? I like to add things to my car that use electricity (such as a 92 watt, 208 watt max total CD player (23 watts, 52 watt max per speaker)) and am planning on putting fog lights and possibly subwoofers in, so I think a voltmeter might be at least marginally helpful...
