temperature gauge

Hi all,
What is the normal/expected position of the temperature gauge on the dashboard indicator?
Mine points straight up after a few minutes of driving the car and stays there (no fluctuations). This is roughly the middle of the scale and seems a little high?
If high what measures need to be taken?
I have 1990, 744GL, 150000miles - good condition.
