AC leak detector kits, need advice 200 1991

I am pretty sure both my 91 and 89 740 have leaks in their AC system.
I'd like to find thenm myself and repair them before going to the mechanic for a refill, and along the way convert to R134.
Any suggestions for the dye kits available and where the likely leaks will be? How easy is this to do? I assume I need a UV light? UV goggles? Better in the dark or light?
