rear main 700

hi all
first post ever but i need some help?
i have to do the rear main seal i have done them before in holdens and found them easy but now i have a volvo i have read haynes manaul and it seems pretty straight forward.
what i really want to know is has anybody done it by dropping the gear box with out pulling the eng out and replacing the seal
the motor is a b230et and auto turbo
