condenser fan question 700

Hi Everyone,

My '84 760 Turbo and '88 740 Turbo both have the plastic fan in front of the a/c condenser. I see the switch in the lower radiator hose that controls this fan, but when does it actually turn on? Neither one of my fans ever turn on with these two cars. When I jump the two wires at the switch, the fans run.
