I wanted to thank everyone for their help on the tranny swap I did on my '89 244. I swapped in a AW 70L auto trany from a 745. My AW70 was totally shot and the torque converter was not availabe with the tranny but I thought mine would work and thankfully this board advised me that it would not work and it saved me pulling out my tranny only to find that the one I had would not go in! As I was down to one car I would of had to put back in my bad tranny just to go and get the right part.
So I took the flywheel/driveplate off without marking it as on all other engines that I have worked on there has been a woodruff key or a pin to ease re-installation. I figured out how to get it back on the right way, but it cost me several hours.
Then I can't believe it but when I had the two trannys sitting by each other I discovered that the new one did not have the cut-through in the bellhousing for the crankshaft speed sensor! I could not swap the bellhousings as they were not interchangeable with the different torque converters, and so I had to cut out the spot on the bellhousing to make the new tranny fit! By that time it was around midnight and I really did not have any other choice...
But it is all in now and working great! So thanks for all of the help from everyone. If I had to do this swap again I would probably just swap in the same tranny to ease istallation; well at least if I was doing the job on the only running and much needed transportation that I had. If I had had another vehicle to drive then it would have all been less stressful and easier...
Thaks again
