using way too much fuel, eeeek! 700 1986

I have a 760 Turbo wagon, automatic. Before I go any further, let me say I am of the female gender and know very little about cars. I've owned this car for three years. It has driven okay. It had some problems last year. I took it to a shop that only worked on Volvos. Mechanic said it was the sensor relay which was also affecting other things. He repaired it and bill was over $900. This car has always done poorly in the speed dept. Hitting a hill meant I was going to slow down. In the last month or so, this problem has gotten very bad. I dread the thought of going up a real hill. It slows to 40 on an incline. And the gas mileage is the worst I've ever come across. I know something is dreadfully wrong because it didn't use to be this bad although it has never had really good gas mileage. I keep the regular maintenance up so it isn't something like oil change, etc. I've read all the information I could and while I have found out quite a bit, this is beyond the information in the manual and it doesn't help the knot in my stomach. I love this car. I'm not sure why. It doesn't really do anything special but I know this car has class. I've considered taking a course in mechanics because, personally, I think with a little of enhancement, this car would run beautifully. So to all you guys out there who baby your Volvo, please advise.Catfish
