Ok before you say read the forum I did. From what I read it could be, Radio Suppression Relay, Fuel Injection Relay, Distributor. I have some other symptoms though, and would like to hear what others suggest given my situation. So here it is:
Bought a 88 740t 256k (canadian model so 412,000 KM) in chicago, it died once in traffic, Got it restarted after a minute. Got about 200 miles midway into illinois, it just up and died again while I was crusing at 70. Once again started up after about 5 min of trying to crank it on and off.
The car is a 4sp +OD manual. The overdrive appears to be working funny too, sometimes it will not disengage when I press the button, or when I slow down to a stop. When I start going agin, I get to second gear and it kinda hear a clunk and the rpms raise. I kinda feel a clunk (tho not totally sure) when it dies on the highway too. Usually when it dies it feels like im going up a hill and I go to press on the gas and all i feel is the car slowing down and the gas doing nothing. The guages look fine. I did not watch the alternator light though. When it does restart the amp meter reads a little less than 1/4" of an inch from the red. I can restart the car by doing a mock push start with the momentum that is left, but pushing on the gas does nothing and when the car slows down it either stalls, or if I drop the clutch the rpm's float down to 0.
I called the previous owner said he had it taken to a shop for this problem, they promised it was solved, they put in some kinda relay (did not say if it was the FPR), and redid some wiring in the fuse box. Well i took a look at the fuse box, and fuse 16 has some wacky metal piece, and I can clearly see melted plastic in a few places.
After the car died the second time I was really starting to sweat, and get stressed out! I decided better not put OD on, so I drove it in 4th the whole way home, watching the rpms (at like 3200), and the temp gauge. Reminded me of my old honda, hehe. But I made it the whole way back, all of Iowa and part of IL, probably about 200 miles from princeton IL to where I live in Iowa.
Im really not sure where to be looking. Of course that fuse box needs fixing. That will probably be my first step, since that just looks dangerous. But then im not sure where I should look.
I looked at the records, alomost a complete set, looks like FPR was done at about 370kms (at 412kms).... so where to go from here?
