Check engine light?? 91 240 200

Hi all, just wanted to ask if anyone knew what to "check" when the check engine light goes on. My parents called on the road and told me of the problem, i suggested they pull over and make sure the oil level is fine, but my dad said that he didn't think that was it. Also my mother mentioned that before the light went on she had noticed a smell and made my dad put up the windows. So, if anyone knows anything about this please help since my parents are going to be stuck no where near anyone who knows anything about volvos.
