oxygen sensor and rough idling 200

Hello,

a few weeks ago I bought a new oxygen sensor for my 83 245 GL with 2.3 L engine. After I changed the sensor, the car started idling really rough.
I checked the voltage on the sensor and it seems fine. After checking the connection and the wiring at the firewall, I decided to put the old sensor back and now the car runs great.
My only doubt is, shall I have tuned the idling mixture on the AMM after changing the sensor? Was I sold the wrong sensor for my car? The sensor was a universal sensor from bosch, bought at Kragen.
Did anyone had a similar experience? I will have to smog my car in a few days and I would have been more confident with a newer O sensor.

Thanks,
Marco.
