Strange miss 900 1994

Hi all. New subscriber.
I have a 1994 960 that had significant damage due to a timing belt failure (imagine that on a 960, huh?!). Anyway, being fairly experienced in the area of engines and mechanics I replaced the engine with a remanufactured unit (fullblock). The replacement engine was from a 1992, which had a few minor differences which I overcame relatively easy. After installation, the new engine cranked right up and runs great, however upon acceleration, the engine gets to right at 2500 rpm and will systematically (as if being controlled by the ECM or another sensor) 'shut down' for a split second and re-run (sort of like a miss, as though someone was turning the key off and on while the engine was running, each time the engine reaches 2500 rpm.
I don't want to say that I am intimately familiar with the 2.9, but I am quite familiar with it and other Volvo engines, having owned many over the last several years and having worked on cars/engines all my young (45 years) life.
Anyone have an idea what might be out of place in this scenario? Again, the replacement engine plugged up and started up great, runs great, except that upon acceleration (either on the road or by manually increasing the engine speed by hand at the linkage), the engine will sit there and systematically shut down/run right at 2500 rpm...

???
Thanks in advance for any help...

P.S. Thought it might ne related to the power modules, so I swapped them out from the original engine (bothe of which were operating great), and it did the same exact thing (except that the engine ran a little more rought at idle with the units from the original engine)...

Thanks again...

Randy Scott
