Blown head gasket on '92 240 wagon - what should I do??? 200

Just got the bad news. Car has 154,000 miles. Just bought it used (for ~$2000) in February, and recently got new tires, a 30,000-mile tuneup, etc. Has new brakes (though they squeak -- last owner put on cheapo metal ones).

I was about to drive it cross-country (I'm moving). Mechanic (in San Francisco - NOT cheap) estimates $1500-$2000 to fix. Am distraught. Any advice appreciated!

Should I:
- find a cheaper mechanic?
- sell it as-is?
- sell it for parts on e-bay (kidding, kind of)?
- tear my hear out & pound my fists on the pavement?
- other suggestions?
