Rear light socket problems - high level brake light/tail light 200 1992

I'm having some trouble with the white bulb socket for the rear high level brake light/tail light in the 92 sedan. For quite some time, the bulb indicator light in my dash would illuminate sometimes when braking - usually when I was idiling at a light. This weekend, I went into the trunk, pulled the plastic cover on the passenger side, and saw that the white socket had two (of three) broken tabs and was not securely latching in. I fiddled around with it, and finally went and bought a new socket (I should have went to the junk yard).

I think that something in the rear light enclosure might be bent - but I can't get the new piece in there and I'm having trouble getting the thing to function correctly. Is there a special way this socket is supposed to go in? Might my enclosure be bent? I've already broken one of the plastic tabs off this new socket trying to jimmy it in there - any advice is appreciated.

Regards,
pu
