Bypassing the armoured coil 120-130 1967

Hi,

I was trying to trace a misfire and found that the engine wouldn't rev much past about 2000 rpm when the points are set to the recommended gap. At half that gap, the engine revs fine but still has that misfire. The coil doesn't run hot but I suspect that the narrow points gap indicates that the coil has seen better days.

There are three terminals on the armoured coil connection that is mounted on the back of the dashboard. A red wire runs from the steering lock assembly to one of these terminals, another red wire runs from the second terminal into the wiring loom (and off to the 25 amp fuse I think) and the third terminal has the remains of a green wire thats been cut off.

All plug gaps are standard. I replaced the condensor on the distributor - this made no difference to the misfire or revving with a normal points gap. All ignition leads are almost new and the distributor cap is new.

Questions:

Does the inability to rev on the standard points gap indicate a failing coil?

If I fit a new standard coil, do I simply connect the red wire from the steering lock assembly to the positive terminal on the new coil?

Shouldn't the green wire be connected to the starter motor and why does it seem to be unnecesary?
