Valve Cover Crack 200

Hi there all,

What would cause the valve cover to crack and spew oil and smoke? The car started out making a metal on metal noise two days before crack. Noise got louder and louder. Sounded like John Dillinger was shooting up the local US bank downtown in Tacoma when I came off the freeway. It was really loud. Checked under hood and there the crack was! Help!!!
