Having a problem with my '79 262 with 3 spd auto;(BW 55)
Car accelerates quite well from a stop, but as soon as you hit 3rd around 60 km/h it can take over a minute to get to 100 km/h. If there is even the slightest incline it will not get over 90 km/h, with the slightest decline it will go to 120 km/h.
Reading through Haynes I see that the BW Tranny has a stator unidirectional clutch that could be seized. Is this typical of the conditions above? Is this a relatively easy (cheap) fix by a decent transmission shop? Another symptom is if I get stuck in trafic, it does not take long for the transmission to overheat and leak out causing lots of white smoke. It appears to be leaking from the area where the engine mates up with the tranny. Could all of this be related to the torque converter?
