EGR Valve Failure??? 200 1991

I keep getting fault codes for the EGR. I have removed the valve a month ago and the pipe going into the intake was completely plugged with carbon. I got this cleaned out and tried to clean the valve. I did at the time notice a smell like burned fuel but this left after I cleaned the valve the first time. Now the light is back on, I don't get the smell but the car wants to stall out now. Have I not throughly cleaned the valve, or am I overlooking something???
