A/C causes drag when accelerating 200 1991

My '91 240 150K tends to have drag when the A/C cycles during accelerating. It almost feels like the car is "Breathing"...Power and then lack of Power on and off on and off. It makes it a little difficult to keep up speed while going up hill especially while driving at highway speeds. Is this something that can be corrected or is it just a normal 240 thing?
