automatic vs. manual transmission 200 1983

hi,
i'm shopping for a new volvo to replace the old one that got killed.

my last one was an automatic, but i'm considering getting a manual transmission car...i'm wondering if anyone has any insight into the pros/cons of automatic vs. manual transmissions. i'm specifically interested in the maintenance/repair cost aspect of both. i'm looking at the 81-85 range of the 240 wagons.

if you had read about my wrecked car: i finally settled with the insurance company - i ended up settling for $1750. they had originally offered me around 1150. i only settled because i was going out of town and felt like i needed to wrap it up before i left, not knowing if the city would tow my car (which was half on the sidewalk) while i was gone......i figure i'll buy something for around $1000 and keep the rest as a repair fund, which would be a great relief for me.

thanks for any info!!!
:) susan.
