Intermittent start problems - 88 240DL 200

I own an 88 240DL sedan with 154k miles on it for the past 18 months. Its been a good car, no issues- all routine maintenance kept up. 6 wks ago, my alternator light started randomly flashing. I took it to my mechanic, who checked the charging system and found the the end of the alternator wires were frayed? - and so he replaced them. That was on 6/10. On 7/4 I went to get in the car after not driving it for 1 1/2 days and it cranked, acted like it wanted to start, all power working, lights, wipers, radio. My husband checked the fuses and it had popped the in tank (not main) fuel pump fuse. He replaced it - the car started right up. Last Fri, 7/15, I went to leave work on a 90 degree day after it had been sitting for 7 hours, and the car wouldn't start. Again, same as 7/4- it acted like it wanted to - just wouldn't turn over. I had it towed 6 miles home and when it came off the flat bed - it started right up. It ran fine for 3 days and on the 4th day it did the same thing - a 90 degree day, it had been sitting for 7 hours, and when I went to leave work, it wouldn't start. I didn't have it towed this time, I left it there for 4 hours and when I came back, it started right up. The next day my husband got the book on the car and all signs pointed to the in tank fuel pump -/ vapor lock, hot starting problems, etc. etc. so he changed the in tank fuel pump and the filter to the pump. It ran for 2 days and tonight 7/21, it dumped me again in the parking lot after I did some errands. I waited for 30 minutes, and it started right up. Again, the weather has been hot outside, but this was at 8:45 p.m so it wasn't that hot out, the car had been running well to three other places and started right up in between those other stops. At this point, I'm at a loss. Where do I start? One last detail, the car has always run a little rough. Almost like it shakes a little. I've had the engine mount changed once and checked a second time since it shakes. But it does act like it might want to stall out - but never has before. 2 weeks before it dumped me I put a gas treatment in the tank because it had been running so rough. It didn't improve. I appreciate any suggestions you might have - where to start - what else it might be. My mechanic (not volvo) says he'll look at it for me on Saturday, but if its running - there's little he can do.
