backfire and no start after thermostat replacing 200 1982

(1982 244GLT)
I was doing a bit or work last night- tweaking the e-brake, changed the thermostat, poked around for problems, and after putting everything back together (basically just the rear wheels, the top radiator hose, the distributor cap (removed to access the bolt) and the thermostat housing) I can't get the car to start.
I checked for spark, I can hear both pumps running, and the starters cranking strong, but it won't catch. I'm getting a mellow sort of back-fire every few turns out of the exhaust.
The only thing I can think of is I put the wires/cap back on wrong (what sequence are the cylinders supposed to be connected to the cap?) or maybe coolant dripped on the timing belt (the cover is off) and made it slip? I took off the air meter boot (K-jet) and pushed down the plate, listening for the injectors, but I couldn't hear them- maybe this is my problem (I've heard they are loud- I've never heard them working though) but both my pumps are working (making noise at least). The in-tank pump was replaced a couple months ago. could this be a blockage in the fuel line?
