I took my time and spent a few weeks diddling around with my '94 945T's head. History was 2 overheats and then oil in the coolant. So I removed the head and the gasket was iffy, it showed signs of deterioration but the head was not far from flat. I had it checked and resurfaced (should improve squish), ground the seats and intake valves, new exhaust valves, seals and the cam bore alignment was fine. Bottom line, I probably could have just replaced the head gasket and gotten away with it for a while longer but I'm happier knowing everything is now set up as it should be. I had Cruzin Performance service the injectors. Again, they were pretty good as they were but Rich made 'em better and balanced across all 4 cyls. 2 flowed about a point less than the other two so I decided to place the freer flowing ones in #1 & #4 and the others in #2 & #3 on the theory the centrally placed ones would benefit from that. I could be all wet with that assumption.
The block looked good, factory crosshatching was still visible and there was very little buildup on the cylinder lip so I cleaned of the carbon and left the rest it as it was. Everything went back together nicely.
I had to replace the AMM to Turbo intake hose. Went down to VoluParts here in Atlanta and ended up with a MTC hose which worried me. They assured me it would be fine as long as my motor mounts hadn't blown out and they were right. By the way, the date code on the hose was 2003.
Ran some Prestone Super Flush through the system to try and remove all the oily residue still in the coolant passages. Didn't get it all out but I'll watch it closely for a few months because I am suspicious of the oil cooler. Although they supposedly rarely fail, I am not convinced the head gasket was the source of the oil leak into the coolant. BUT, considering the cost of a new unit, I'll watch it for awhile. With the head gasket corrected, if the problem recurs, I'll know where the problem lies.
Got everything back together last night and ran it to work this morning. It runs like a scalded cat. I had forgotten how much pickup the thing has. My A/F meter reads richer at WOT than before so the injector cleaning paid off and the new valve seals seem to have eliminated the smoke I was producing under acceleration.
I even gave the valve cover a new coat of black paint...makes it run faster you know.
Whoopee; a happy camper I am.
Just thought I'd add my experience for your perusal and entertainment.
