can't start 87 245 dl 5 speed 200

I recently purchased an 87 245 dl 5 speed VIN YV1AX8854H1762164. It has been run very little for last 3 years. The PO started it with a little fiddling, then I started it with some pumping, then it sat for a week. It cranks and almost starts but dies immediately. Gas gauge showed empty, I added a few gallons. No joy. We do NOT hear any buzz from fuel pump, do not see any blown fuses according to kick panel sticker location. It looks like someone (PO?) recently tapped on gas tank w/hammer? several small blows not yet rusted. Every local place has outside fuel pump for $86 in stock, in tank for $35 (must order). Don't see an outside pump. Do I have BOTH pumps or how do I tell? Where is outside pump if it exists? Is Autozone pump OK? Haines says don't assume complex problem, but ground wires look OK. How hard timewise to put pump(s) in in parking lot? I'm guessing since everyone has external pump in stock these must be the most common units. I would like a quick and dirty way to get it going, then a more permanent fix. This is job number 1.
Seperate issue: battery appears pretty new but much smaller than tray....which Wal-Mart or Sams battery will fit? Does 65 (big Toyota battery in my old F-150) fit? I like big high capacity batteries. I'm having a little trouble getting search to work, so sorry if question has been asked and answered. Thanks.
