3.31 rear end in turbo? 200 1985

Has anyone tried a 3.31 rear end in a 240 turbo w/IC? Would a 1030 3.31:1 gearset from an n/a 240 drop in, and could it withstand the additional torque? Bad match for the engine's power curve? More turbo lag?

This would be to replace a 3.73 gearset in an '85 244Ti with an M46 tranny. Idea is to lower cruising RPMs (currently 3000 rpm at about 72mph in 4+OD) on the highway where most driving is done, and to increase fuel economy.
