Octane for B20B, book says 100??? 140-160

My OEM factory repair manual says that I should be using 100 octane fuel? Is there a difference in the way they measured octane in the early 70's v/s today, or should I be using premium with a bottle of octane booster? My emgine is not running very smoothly, but I've not noticed any preignition (knocking or pinging), I just think the carb is a little off (Weber conversion, separate post)
