Why does it Ping more when the oil is low 900

I have a 91 945 turbo that in general runs well. Normally I use 10-30 synthetic and I have noticed that when I get anywhere past 1/2 quart low to a quart low the engine pings more. It's very soft but it still sounds like pinging to me. Anyone ever have a similar experience?
