A/C Dead - turned engine off with A/C On. 200 1989

My A/C was working fine this morning. However, driving back from work,
it was blowing hot air. One mistake I made was to turn the
engine off while the A/C was on (a la resetting the Odometer
while the car is moving). I once heard that it's not
a good idea since it creates extra pressure in the lines.
Anyone else heard of this taboo before?
