Hello, got a new 264 yesterday (no jokes please--yet). The previous short-term owner told me the alternator was dead. They bought a brand new battery and it went dead within a few days.
All the dash lights are lit half bright except the oil light, which is unlit. Revving the engine dims the dash lights slightly. I had the alt bench tested at a local auto electric place. It is still good. I swapped voltage regulators with a running 1980 260 no change. Both regulators work in the good 260, neither works in the bad 260.
Disconnecting the battery kills the engine instantly.
I can get about 12.6 volts off the alt and about a 10th volt less at the battery. Revving gets it up to about 13 volts. I can't get the 14.4 that seems to be the ideal.
I've tried running the fuel pumps of their own power supply by jumping them at the fusebox, but the dash lights remain on (read on other posts that a fuel pump relay was causing excessive drain (?)).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. And let me say it's nice to be working on an electrical problem on a 260 rather than the engine for a change.
thanks,
Aaron
