940 2.3 LPT cutting out - Can't get to diagnostic codes 900 1995

I'm having a problem with my 1995 940 estate. 2.3 with a light pressure turbo. 230FK engine.

The car has cut out four times now and completely dies. No coughing or spluttering just drops dead. Engine management light comes on immediately and coast to a halt. All usual lights come on for a stationary engine. I turn off ignition and wait for a few seconds and it restarts with no problem and runs fine but engine management light stays on. No difference in the way she runs with light on or off. If it is a limp home mode it is very good. Light can be reset by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.

This fault has happened three times in the wet and once in the dry, three times on trailing throttle and once on a steady throttle, so no real pattern.

I have replaces the crank position sensor, air mass meter, ignition power unit and checked and cleaned all the connections I could find. None showed any significant signs of corrosion.

This year 940 doesn't have the self diagnostic black box that earlier ones have and uses a diagnostic socket in the locker between the two front seats. I have been to two garages now to get the fault codes out but despite a very impressive array of hardware being plugged into the socket no-one seems to be able to give me a code. I think in 1997 Volvo went to a standard format for the dignostic format but between 95 and 97 they seem to have done their own thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Ditch
