740 Expansion Tank Anti-Freeze Level 700 1991

I have had several 740s and the anti-freeze level seems to stabilize at about the top of the connection to the radiator (the very bottom of the expansion tank). This makes the level hard to check without removing the cap. Has anyone found a good way of lowering the expansion tank easily an inch or so or maybe a replacement from a 940 (one of the rectangular tanks) would be lower. At least the 940 tank would have more volume when near empty. Any proven suggestions would be appreciated.
