I have been having a strange problem with my 1992 740 wagon. I will go through the whole problem in hopes of getting some suggestions. The problem started when I was driving and the car just started cutting out like it did not have spark. I knew I had a poor battery terminal connection so I replaced that along with checking all the ignition wiring. Well after that work the car would not turn over. I finally figured out that the battery cable to the starter was bad. So I by passed the cable with an extra set of jumper cables. Car started fine and ran. Most of the time I was working on the car the battery was charging. I drove the car about two hours after this episode. I hit a rain storm and had to turn on the lights and wipers. The car started to cut out like it did not have spark and all my gauges started to slowly die. The car was not charging and it had ran out of electrical power. The car died and I had to have it towed 60 miles.

So at this point I was hell bent on getting this figured out. Well I pulled the alternator and had it tested, it passed and I replaced the bad battery cable. So I had the car jumped off and it started right up and would run for a minute and then die. There was not charge getting to the battery and the entire electrical system. So I by passed the wire from the alternator to the battery and the car ran fine charged up and started fine. I thought I was out of the woods. Well the next morning I had to leave on a long trip and the battery was dead. Hoping that it was just the lack of a good charge I had it jumped off and got on my way. Well about three hours in to the drive I hit the blinkers and the car started to cut out in the exact same way it had before, no spark. I could tell the car was running out of charge again. I made it to where I was going and when I cut the car off after a seven hour drive it would not start. So what I am looking for is suggestions of possible problems I have overlooked? I am going to replace the alternator just to eliminate it as a problem and it is old. It seems like the whole electrical system is going down the tubes all at once. Any advice would be appreciated.
