740 turbo diesel overdrive problem 700 1989

Fist thing, my name is Adrian. Im from Swansea Wales UK. This is my first post, so here goes. I bought a 740 turbo diesel a few weeks ago. Im trying to sort a few problems out with it. The overdrive refuses to work. An auto electrician has had a look at it and said the solonoid seems to be clicking in. He renewed the cabling to it, but still nothing. Has anybody any idea's? I was wondering how big a job it would be to put a five speed box in instead.
