Bad VR or short somewhere? 700

The other night right after starting up my 87 760T all the idiot lights on the dash started to flicker, somewhat in sync with engine rpm's (brighter = higher rpm). The voltmeter stayed way over near the red (10), moved slightly with higher rpm's also. That makes me think Voltage Regulator.

However the wiring harness is in rough shape (original), with many bare spots, and poor connections I'm sure (oil light usually on, sender wire stripped bare in places). The strange thing is the headlights never dimmed when idle dropped, the engine ran seemed to run the same, the car seemed to have all the "normal" electrical capacity.

I haven't driven it for 2 days now, it's still doing the same thing. I poked around for about 2 hours last night hoping to find some obvious bad spot, but no luck.

Anyone know of any common problem areas I can check? I'm buying a harness from Dave (http://www.bartonharness.com/volvoharnesses.html#87_740-760_Turbo) but I need to make the car driveable for tomorrow.

thanks
