Need to clarify a point on alternator wiring 444-544

I've learned from this forum that the charging light is a necessary part of the system. What I need to know is if the value of the resistance across the bulb is critical. Can the light itself just be eliminated and simply hook the wire to a hot [run] source? Or can the light be replaced with a resistor and if so, what resistance and power rating would do the trick? The car is a 445 and so has an ammeter and not a charging indicator light.
