Cylinder Head Removal 700

I sold my 88 740 turbo wagon to a friend (broke med school student) who overheated the engine and did not turn it off in time. Head gasket is blown and head will have to be machined or replaced. Since I'm a sympathetic idiot, I'm helping him do the job (I'm doing the job.) Can't find my old 740 Haynes manual but found a Haynes 240 manual, which should be similar. I've removed the exhaust, intake, and getting ready to remove the timing belt. The manual also says to remove the camshaft. Is that necessary? Do I need to remove the distributor (straight back at end of camshaft?)?

Appreciate any advice.
