measuring crankshaft and connecting rod bearing journals 700 1988

Hello.... What is the proper way to measure the crankshaft and connecting rod bearing journals? I was advised to use plastigage. What specs should I be looking at in order to compare? I guess what I am asking is, once that the plastigage is compressed and the width is checked, which specs do I need to look for to see if the bearings are within tolerances. For example, the compressed plastigage measures .005....what do I do with this number? I don't have a micrometer that is large enought to measure the journals themselves, but I do have a 12" digital caliper. please advise. Thanks again.
