AC retrofir trouble 700

1990 745 GL.
I read posts. I read FAQ's (even printed them off). I bought the factory kit and followed the instructions. Now, however, I can't get freon into the system. I've tried 2 different hoses, I've even taken the fitting off to ensure that my filler hose is connecting and opening the valve.
All I get is hissing as freon escapes from between my filler hose and the fitting in the car that came with the kit.
Everything went fine with the retrofit as far as I could tell but the system doesn't seem to let the freon in.
Is there some dumb detail I need to check?
Some dumb step I screwed up?
Ant thoughtful diag or troubleshooting tips or thoughts welcome.
The heat is killing my wife and she is contemplating killing me.
