auto tranny won't shift to high gear 700 1991

any ideas on what is causing this? When car is first started and put into gear to take off everything is fine and shifts ok untill high gear, which it won;t shift into for mabey 5 miles. After the oil is warm it works fine so it seems to be temperature related is there a heat sensor that must be satisfied befor it shifts.
